Botanical Name: Murraya koenigii
Description:
The curry leaf plant is a tropical evergreen shrub or small tree. Its leaves are fragrant and commonly used in South Asian cooking. The leaves are dark green and shiny, growing in rows along thin stems. The plant is both useful in the kitchen and attractive as a garden plant. It grows well outdoors in warm places or indoors in pots.
Light:
The plant grows best in full sun or bright light. It needs about 6–8 hours of sunlight each day. If it does not get enough light, the plant may grow weak and thin.
Watering:
Water the plant regularly, but let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry before watering again. Do not overwater because very wet soil can cause the roots to rot.
Soil:
Use soil that drains water well and has organic matter. Mixing potting soil with sand or perlite helps the soil drain better.
Temperature:
The plant grows well in warm temperatures between 18–32°C (65–90°F). It does not tolerate frost or very cold weather.
Humidity:
It prefers moderate humidity (around 40–60%). If the air is very dry, increasing humidity can help keep the leaves healthy.
Fertilizing:
Use a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to help the plant produce healthy leaves. Do not fertilize during winter when the plant grows slowly.
Pruning:
Pruning helps the plant grow bushy and healthy. Pinch or trim new tips regularly to encourage more leaves.
Placement:
This plant grows well in outdoor gardens in warm climates, kitchen herb gardens, patios, or indoor pots near sunny windows. It can also be grown on balconies or in greenhouses.
