Botanical Name: Carissa carandas
Description:
Karonda is a strong evergreen shrub or small tree. It has thick, thorny branches and shiny green leaves. The plant grows small white flowers that smell nice. After flowering, it produces round or oval fruits. The fruits change color from green to pink, red, and finally dark purple when they ripen. Karonda fruits are rich in vitamin C and iron. People often use them to make pickles, jams, and chutneys, and they are also used in traditional medicine. The plant is also grown as a hedge because it grows thick and can survive in dry or poor soil.
Care Instructions:
Light:
Karonda grows best in full sunlight but can also grow in partial shade. It should get about 5–8 hours of sunlight every day for good growth and fruit production.
Watering:
Water the plant moderately. Keep the soil slightly moist, but let the top layer of soil dry before watering again. Avoid too much water because it can harm the roots.
Soil:
It grows well in well-drained sandy or fertile soil with organic matter. It can also grow in rocky or less fertile soil if the water drains well.
Temperature:
Karonda grows well in warm tropical and subtropical climates. The ideal temperature is between 20–35°C. Protect young plants from very cold temperatures or frost.
Humidity:
The plant can grow well in normal outdoor humidity and becomes drought-tolerant once it is established.
Fertilizing:
Add organic compost or a balanced fertilizer during the growing season every 1–3 months to help the plant grow healthy and produce more fruits.
Pruning:
Prune the plant regularly to keep its shape and make it bushier. Remove any dead or damaged branches when needed.
