Description:
The spider plant is a common indoor plant that is very easy to grow. It has long, thin leaves that bend outward. The leaves are usually green with white or yellow stripes, which makes the plant look fresh and beautiful. The plant grows small white, star-shaped flowers on long stems. Later, these stems produce small baby plants called “spiderettes.” Spider plants are popular because they help clean the air inside homes. They grow well in bright, indirect light but can also survive in low light. The plant needs soil that drains water well and moderate watering. Because it grows quickly and needs little care, people often keep spider plants in hanging baskets, pots, and indoor gardens.
Care Instructions:
Light:
Place the spider plant in bright but indirect sunlight. It can grow in low light, but it grows better and the leaves look healthier in medium or bright indirect light. Do not place it in direct sunlight because it can burn the leaves.
Watering:
Water the plant when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil a little moist but not too wet. Too much water can damage the roots. Water less during winter.
Soil:
Use loose soil that drains water easily. Normal indoor plant potting soil works well.
Temperature & Humidity:
The best temperature for spider plants is between 18–30°C. They grow well in normal indoor humidity and can also handle dry air.
Fertilizing:
Give the plant a balanced liquid fertilizer once every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer. Do not use too much fertilizer.
Pruning:
Cut off brown or dry leaf tips. Remove old or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy and looking nice.
Propagation:
Spider plants are easy to grow from their baby plants (spiderettes). You can plant these in soil or place them in water until roots grow.
Pests & Problems:
Spider plants usually do not get many pests, but sometimes aphids or spider mites may appear. Brown leaf tips can happen because of fluoride in water, so using filtered or distilled water can help.
